The Diet tips you need to know to stay fit
We are constantly bombarded with information as to what we should or shouldn’t consume to keep us healthy but sometimes it can be a lot of information to take in. We thought we’d just give a quick overview that you can look over from time to time to make sure you’re hitting the right notes when it comes to your diet.
Preparation is vital
Eating healthy on the go can be tough so you need to plan ahead. Make lunch the night before, prepare a healthy meal that is big enough to last a couple of days. Preparing in advance means that you don’t skip meals and you’re not left picking up something unhealthy on the run.
Starchy Foods are good
Starchy foods should make up around one third of the foods you eat. Starchy foods include potatoes, cereals, pasta, rice and bread. Choose wholegrain varieties (or eat potatoes with their skins on) when you can: they contain more fibre, and can help you feel full. The popular misconception goes that starchy foods are fattening, but gram for gram the carbohydrate they contain provides fewer than half the calories of fat.
Fruit & Veg is key
Getting the fabled five a day is easier than you think. A glass of unsweetened 100% fruit juice (150ml) can be one portion, and vegetables cooked into dishes can be another. Chop up a banana over your breakfast cereal, enjoy a piece of fresh fruit for your mid morning work break.
Fish is the dish
Fish is a good source of protein and contains many vitamins and minerals but how often do you eat it? Try and get at least two portions of fish a week, including at least one portion of oily fish which contains omega-3 fats, which may help to prevent heart disease. (Be careful though canned and smoked fish can be high in salt).
We need to drink about 1.6 to 2 litres of fluid every day to stop us getting dehydrated. When the weather is warm, or when we get active, we may need more fluids.
Get out there
Eating a healthy, balanced diet plays an essential role in maintaining a healthy weight, which is an important part of overall good health. Physical activity can help you to maintain weight loss or be a healthy weight. After getting active, remember not to reward yourself with a treat that is high in energy. If you feel hungry after activity, choose foods or drinks that are lower in calories.
